Position Summary
This permanent, part-time, non-benefited position as an Environmental Educator at Burton 4-H Center located on Tybee Island, Georgia. The primary responsibility is to independently lead K-12 grade students through multidisciplinary classes in an outdoor setting. Class subjects offered include life and earth science, ecology, and marine science. Other responsibilities include animal care, maintenance of teaching areas and resources, facilities, grounds, and support of general operations of the facility.
Minimum QualificationsRequires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies- Commitment, genuine interest in child development, dynamic personality, well-developed communication skills, creativity, and leadership ability
- Skill in teaching a wide variety of subjects to K‑12 grade youth
- Broad knowledge of outdoor education and ability to work in an outdoor setting
- Ability to communicate effectively with youth and adults
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to work with and care for live teaching animals (reptiles, amphibians, and others)
- Independently lead K-12 grade students through multidisciplinary classes in an outdoor setting for 1‑2 or 3‑day field studies. Class subjects include life and earth science, survival skills, team building, high‑and–low‑ropes challenges, and pioneer living skills. (65% of time)
- Maintenance and cleanup of facilities and grounds; dining hall assistance; general support of overall center operations, including office and reception work, scheduling school and conference group visits, maintaining the master calendar for the 4‑H Center, working in the dining hall or kitchen as needed, conference group support, on‑call duties, light maintenance projects, housekeeping duties, and canteen operations. (25% of time)
- Animal care and maintenance of teaching areas including the herpetology lab. (10% of time)
Work when exposed to outdoor elements including but not limited to adverse physical and weather conditions. Lift 20‑40 pounds and walk approximately 3 miles daily. Driving.
