Position SummaryThis faculty role is responsible for 4-H Youth Development programming in Mitchell County. The position creates and delivers educational opportunities for youth in 4-H club meetings, coordinates local activities, and prepares youth for project and judging events. The instructor works closely with advisory groups, community leaders, public officials and representatives of intended audiences to analyze data, identify needs, and assist in developing educational programs.
The faculty member develops a federal Plan of Work that meets the varied socioeconomic needs of the county and collaborates with other agencies and community groups to plan and implement programs. The Mitchell County 4-H Extension program serves a school population of 1,258 with 200 4th and 5th‑graders. The faculty member promotes 4-H in the community and may attend conferences, 4-H camp, and other programs.
Frequent night meetings, some weekend work, and attendance at out‑of‑county meetings are required. A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable private vehicle for official duty travel is required; reimbursement for business travel will be provided. Transportation of others, including 4-H Youth and Adult Clientele, is a common and necessary function of the job.
- Master’s degree in Human/Youth Development, Sociology, Education, Agriculture, Family & Consumer Sciences, Recreation, or a related area.
- A Bachelor’s degree is acceptable for a Public Service Provisional Faculty appointment (see Additional Requirements for more information).
- Computer skills, including knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to speak to and teach large groups of residents.
- Ability to organize and carry out activities and programming for youth.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with county, district, and state staff, local government employees, and clientele.

- Manage the 4-H program in Mitchell County by providing educational programs for youth in 4-H club meetings, coordinating local activities, and preparing youth for project and judging events.
- Implement the CAES Civil Rights/Equal Opportunity plan and ensure that clients understand that UGA Extension offers its educational programs, assistance, and materials to all people without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation or protected veteran status.
- Identify, recruit, train, and supervise 4-H volunteers in planning, teaching, and evaluating Cooperative Extension 4-H programs.
- Assist volunteers in successfully completing the 4-H Chaperone Training.
- Manage multiple programs that may receive leadership from volunteers, such as the Archery Team, Shotgun Team, Horse Club, BB Team, and Livestock Show Teams.
- Produce reports to appropriate clientele, staff members, Board of Education, Board of Commissioners, and public officials through mass media (social media, County websites, etc.) and personal contacts or group meetings.
