Job Overview
The Teacher - Special Education provides support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for developing special education students' success in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living. The role includes supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas, developing lesson plans, delivering group and individual instruction within established curricular guidelines, collaborating with faculty and administrators to address instructional and classroom issues, and responding to inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding instructional programs and student progress.
Responsibilities- Ensure classroom work addresses individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
- Administer developmental testing programs and subject‑specific assessments to assess student competency levels and develop individual learning plans.
- Provide first aid and assistance to medically fragile children under supervision, including tube feeding, toileting, and diapering.
- Advise parents and legal guardians on student progress, communicate expectations, identify IEP goals, and develop improvement strategies.
- Assess student progress towards objectives, expectations, and IEP goals—including behavioral, motor development, communication, academic, and vocational skills—and provide feedback to students, parents, and administrators.
- Collaborate with instructional staff, school personnel, parents, and community stakeholders to improve student outcomes and achieve classroom objectives aligned with the school improvement plan.
- Counsel students to improve performance, general wellbeing, problem‑solving techniques, and personal issues.
- Demonstrate methods required to perform classroom and subject‑specific assignments to address individual IEP goals.
- Guide assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and student workers to support classroom programming and individual student needs.
- Instruct students to improve success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
- Manage student behavior, completing functional behavior assessments, implementing behavior intervention plans, and monitoring progress to provide a safe learning environment.
- Monitor students in various educational settings (classroom, playground, field trips, nap times) to ensure safety and positivity.
- Participate in meetings to convey and gather information necessary for performance of duties.
- Prepare written materials—grades, attendance, anecdotal records—to document progress toward IEP goals and meet mandated requirements.
- Report suspected child or substance abuse to the site administrator to maintain safety and comply with regulations.
- Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns or direct personnel for resolution.
- Respond to inquiries from teachers, parents, and administrators to resolve issues, provide information, and give direction.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers for the implementation of individualized education plans.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned to ensure effective functioning of the work unit.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Georgia certification in Special Education.
Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling. Significant fine finger dexterity required. Typical work pattern: 20% sitting, 40% walking, 40% standing.
Continuing Education / TrainingMaintain all required licenses and certifications.
