Job Summary

Responsible for planning and providing appropriate learning experiences for students with emotional and behavioral disabilities (EBD) in accordance with the district’s Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum. Duties include curriculum implementation, IEP coordination, classroom management, assessment and collaboration with regular education staff.

Qualifications
  • License and Certification: Georgia certification in appropriate field of education.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in applicable field from a Professional Standards Commission (PSC) approved institution.
  • Experience: Previous teaching experience preferred.
  • Skills: Knowledge of GCPS Academic Knowledge and Skills curriculum, integration techniques, effective instructional practices, technology use, collaboration with staff and community, oral and written communication, assessment skills, mastery of subject area, knowledge of IDEIA and due process.
Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate command of subject(s) taught.
    • Provide direct instruction or specially designed instruction to students in special programs consistent with the district curriculum and IEPs.
    • Consult with classroom teachers and local administrators to develop and maintain academic and behavioral programs.
    • Participate as an active member of the school faculty, sharing duties with classroom teachers.
    • Conduct in‑service programs to faculty on special education topics such as IDEA and program‑specific strategies.
    • Collaborate with regular educators to support students with disabilities in inclusive classrooms.
  • Develop and prioritize long‑ and short‑term instructional objectives and plan lessons that promote mastery of prerequisite skills.
  • Analyze student work and assessments to determine instructional needs and prepare written lesson plans.
  • Plan appropriate assessments of student learning.
  • Evaluate, select, and modify instructional resources, ensuring alignment with AKS and best practice.
  • Administer screening and diagnostic assessments, interpret findings for parents and classroom teachers.
  • Open lessons with clear objectives, link content to prior knowledge, and capture student attention.
  • Organize content logically, using researched instructional frameworks such as anticipatory set, guided practice, and independent practice.
  • Employ scientifically researched instructional strategies, provide feedback, and model skills for distributed guided practices.
  • Teach vocabulary and content‑related skills explicitly; use visual and alternative representations.
  • Facilitate formative assessment, monitor progress, adjust instruction, and enable students to measure their own progress.
  • Administer summative assessments, maintain records, and communicate results.
  • Arrange the learning environment to support student time on task, ensuring smooth transitions.
  • Maintain a proactive and positive classroom behavior routine, define expectations, monitor behavior, and respond to inappropriate behavior with appropriate feedback.
  • Assist students with physical needs when appropriate and ensure safe travel.
  • Ensure compliance with IDEA, state guidelines, and due‑process requirements.
  • Engage in professional growth activities and apply new knowledge to instruction.
  • Execute professional responsibilities, including punctuality, accurate record‑keeping, and substitute planning.

  • Physical Demands

    Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling; fine finger dexterity. Exposure to risk of injury or illness and clean environment. Vision: close, distance, color, depth perception. Reasonable accommodations available.
