LIBRARY ASSISTANT – YOUTH SERVICES (Part Time)

Location:

Newton Free Library - Newton.

Responsibilities
  • Provide exemplary customer service at Youth Services service points, by phone, and via electronic means.
  • Assist library patrons (children, tweens, teens, and adults) by locating desired information and resources; suggest patron reading materials.
  • Utilize library computer systems to process returns, checkouts, renewals, reservations, registrations, and collect fines and fees; sort and shelve returned items.
  • Process inter‑library loan and reserve requests, handle incoming and outgoing shipments, and notify patrons of item availability.
  • Assist patrons with museum pass information, event and study room registration, and related library services.
  • Assist with the use of library computers and equipment, performing first‑pass troubleshooting and coordinating with IT support.
  • Develop, conduct, and promote public programs to enhance library services.
  • Attend and participate in department meetings and special events as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and up to one year of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Customer service experience and knowledge of library science, including use of library equipment (computers, printers, audio‑visual equipment). Experience working with children and families required.
  • Broad knowledge of library functions, databases, electronic resources, and peripheral equipment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to read, interpret, and write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to present information effectively and tactfully to a variety of audiences.
  • Strong technology troubleshooting skills and commitment to public service.
Schedule

Part‑time; up to 16 hours per week, including weekends and evenings.

Compensation

$19.59 per hour.
