Position Summary

The Biomedical Physiology program is the first undergraduate program in the College of Veterinary Medicine. The minor was established in Fall 2021 and the major in Fall 2022. Our students are primarily interested in health‑professions and life‑science careers. The program currently serves more than 1,000 students. The Academic Advisor I will meet with assigned and prospective students, provide accurate information about current student progress, recommend course selections for future semesters, and generate advising forms and notes to document interactions.

Advisors maintain consistent contact with students and respond in a timely manner to questions. Advisors also assist students with referrals to other units at UGA, including the Office for Student Success and Achievements, Accessibility and Testing, and the Pre‑Professional Advising Office.

Regular attendance of staff meetings and advising workshops is expected. Advisors should be available to work throughout June, July, and early August orientation sessions for incoming first‑year and transfer students, as well as orientation sessions conducted in December and January.

Responsibilities
  • Meet with assigned and prospective students in person or remotely to review academic progress and recommend course selections.
  • Generate advising forms and notes with sufficient detail to document interactions.
  • Maintain consistent contact with students experiencing academic difficulty and participate in the Connect and Complete process.
  • Assist students with referrals to other UGA units including the Office for Student Success and Achievement, Accessibility and Testing, and the Pre‑Professional Advising Office.
  • Attend campus advising group meetings, pursue a certificate in Academic Advising, and work on projects assigned by supervisor such as advising resource updates, statistical reports, program‑related events, and other duties as assigned.
  • Occasionally assist with educational programming for BIPH undergraduate students, such as first‑year and transfer student orientation sessions, Convocation, prospective student visits and events.
  • Prepare extensively and maintain proficiency with various campus systems, software, and resources including Athena, Degree Works, and SAGE.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent.
  • Experience advising pre‑health or life‑science majors, lower and upper level, and transfer students.
  • Strong service ethic, excellent organizational skills, and attention to detail.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Strong service ethic and investigative approach to student needs.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills, with an ability to handle multiple tasks and tight deadlines.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, to interact effectively with students, faculty, and university staff.
Physical Demands
  • Sit at a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Light lifting.
