Academic Advisor

The primary responsibility of an Academic Advisor in the Office of Undergraduate Services in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication is to provide comprehensive academic guidance to an assigned caseload of 275-350 majors in Advertising, Entertainment and Media Studies, Journalism, and Public Relations. This role requires consistent communication with students and detailed record-keeping. Core responsibilities include meeting regularly with students to offer accurate information about degree program requirements and course planning;

maintaining advising notes and records; and developing a strong knowledge of academic regulations and student support resources. Advisors also provide orientation advising and program support for incoming first-year and transfer students.

The successful candidate will work collegially in a team environment with the undergraduate staff, departments, and faculty in support of the undergraduate learning mission at Grady College. The position requires outstanding written and oral communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, data management, and task and time management skills.

Duties/Responsibilities
- Advising Students:
Meet with students to recommend courses for the next semester, prepare advising forms, answer student questions, communicate with students via email, maintain thorough advising notes about appointments and other contact with students, direct students to appropriate resources, and maintain contact with other stakeholders in students' success. This involves extensive prep time and proficiency with various campus systems, software, and resources.

Percentage of time: 60

- Administrative Time:
Answer student and staff emails, respond to student questions, schedule meetings and networking opportunities, and work on projects to benefit the Office of Undergraduate Services. A high level of independent work is expected. Percentage of time: 30

Attend classes or training related to academic advising or related subjects. This can include, but is not limited to, the Certificate in Academic Advising. Professional development will be essential to this cross-trained specialization. Regularly attend staff meetings for updates, any scheduled committee meetings, and others as needed.
