Under general supervision from Energy Plant Management or other high‑level supervisor, the Engineer is responsible for the operation of all Energy Plant Facilities (heating plant, chilled water plant, and water treatment plant) used to produce and distribute steam, chilled water, and hot water to the campus in the appropriate quantities, pressure, and temperature. The role requires extensive knowledge of plant systems and sound judgment to respond safely to all operating scenarios, including emergencies.

Responsibilities include mandating boiler, chiller, and associated plant subsystems, providing guidance and training to other classifications, acting as lead worker for shift, ensuring safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant operation, plant security and personnel safety. Work is performed on a 24‑hour rotating shift basis.

• Adhere to all OSHA and University safety guidelines, identify hazards, and maintain a safe work environment.
• Serve as lead worker providing direction and training to other Energy Plant workers on assigned shift.
• Periodically monitor and inspect all plant areas, read gauges, monitor power consumption, and operate equipment as necessary.
• Oversee water treatment plant operation, ensuring continuous flow of properly treated water, performing laboratory tests and record‑keeping.
• Monitor environmental parameters to ensure compliance with regulations and take corrective action.
• Act as lead safety officer, including mandatory safety training for staff.
• Operate coal conveyor system and maintain plant and equipment in absence of other employees.
• Maintain knowledge of plant systems and assist in personnel training for new systems.

Shift work:
Friday – Tuesday, 10:00 pm – 6:00 am, with days off Wednesday & Thursday. Expected hours: 40 per week. Possible exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, noise, steam, hot water, and high temperatures. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

• Stationary Steam Engineer License per Section 4104.19 of the Revised Code and all Ohio Department of Commerce requirements.
• Knowledge of boiler plant operations, baghouse, chilled water plant operations, and associated water treatment processes.
• Knowledge of stationary engineering and the capacity to operate associated equipment.
• Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate emergency action.
• Understanding of powerhouse procedures.
• Ability to follow written, oral, and pictorial instructions, and work independently or with others.
• Willingness to foster a welcoming and respectful workforce and community.
• Dexterity and skill in use of hand or power tools and equipment.
• Basic literacy, numeracy, and application of mathematical principles.
• Knowledge of all applicable OSHA and University safety guidelines.
• Successful completion of a written test or practical exam may be required.
• Demonstrated good work habits, performance, and interpersonal skills.

Hourly rate: $28.28 – $31.82. Full‑time benefits eligible employees receive additional compensation.
