Environmental Engineer

FLSA STATUS: Exempt - Executive
CLASSIFICATION: Personnel System;
Requires satisfactory completion of a six month probationary period.
PAY GRADE: 120 - 122; depending on qualifications
SAFETY SENSITIVE: Yes, Subject to random drug testing per the Athens-Clarke County Drug and Alcohol Ordinance.
Purpose of Job
The purpose of this job is to perform administrative/supervisory functions associated with coordinating and managing Public Utilities projects. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: coordinating and supervising section personnel and activities as assigned; coordinating, reviewing, and inspecting engineering projects or activities; ensuring these activities are performed in accordance with applicable codes; and performing additional tasks as required.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, subject to call back 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Night meetings and weekend work may be required.
May be required to work on religious holidays.
Regular and predictable attendance is required.
Must work cooperatively with others.
When requirements include vehicle operation, the employee is responsible for the safety, readiness, and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy.
Emergency Position
This position is designated as an emergency position that requires your attendance at work under all types of emergency conditions. Some examples of emergencies include inclement weather, utility failure, fire or other forced evacuations or as determined by the Manager.
ENGINEER I ($61,332)- High school diploma or equivalent required with four years of experience in the required discipline (Engineering, Construction Management, Design Engineering, Land Development, Stormwater, Water & Waste Water Systems, Pavement Management, Utilities Engineering) required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Two years of supervisory experience is preferred.
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Design Engineering, or related discipline with two years of experience in a related field required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Certification as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is required.
- Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Two years of supervisory experience is preferred.
- Certification as a Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission Level 1A preferred.
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Design Engineering, or related discipline with four years of experience in a related field required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Professional Engineer (PE) is required.
- Two years of supervisory experience is required.
- Certification as a Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission Level 1A is required within 6 months.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
Typical Duties
- Supervises and evaluates assigned staff, handling all employee concerns, directing work assignments, counseling and disciplining employees when necessary, and completing employee performance appraisals depending on area of assignment.
- Directs project design(s) and the production of plans, specifications, and necessary documents for Transportation & Public Works or Public Utilities projects.
- Prepares project estimates, status reports, and presentations.
- Directs the inspection of projects for compliance with contract requirements and established standards and specifications.
- Attends division and department meetings to develop, plan, design, and assess funding and schedule projects.
- Assists in maintaining and administering departmental programs.
- Assists in the development of departmental standards and specifications.
- Assists in the preparation of technical reports and/or studies for approval by the Commission.
- Assists with reports, correspondence, forms, charts, and other documentation; reviews and maintains records; provides information to the public and performs other clerical duties.
- Performs other related duties as required.
When Assigned to the Public Utilities/Engineering Management
- Acts as Project Engineer for Public Utilities Department waterline and sanitary sewer projects as assigned in association with the Service Delivery Plan, the Infrastructure, and the Capital Improvement Elements or in-house design projects.
