Location: remote in GA (will travel frequently to sites across the state)
Position Summary: This role is responsible for performing on-site inspections of electric utility substations during construction, expansion, and upgrade projects. The individual will serve as the field-facing extension of the engineering team, verifying that installed equipment and construction activities align with approved designs, specifications, and standards. They will document field conditions in detail and provide clear, actionable reports to the headquarters engineering team to support accurate CAD updates and design revisions.
Daily responsibilities include:
- Perform routine and ad-hoc field inspections of substations under construction or modification
- Verify construction and equipment installation against approved drawings, specifications, and standards
- Identify discrepancies, constructability issues, and deviations from design
- Capture detailed field documentation including notes, photos, measurements, and redlines
- Produce clear, structured inspection reports for engineering and design teams
- Communicate findings effectively with substation engineering, design, and project teams
- Coordinate with construction personnel while maintaining an independent inspection perspective
Required Qualifications / skills:
- Experience working with electric utility substations (transmission and/or distribution)
- Strong understanding of substation components (structures, bus, breakers, transformers, protection & control, grounding, etc.)
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, one-lines, layouts, and construction documents
- Field experience in construction oversight, inspection, commissioning, or maintenance
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to produce detailed technical reports
- High attention to detail and ability to clearly document discrepancies
- Comfortable working independently in the field and interfacing with multiple stakeholders
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites
Plusses:
- Background in electrical engineering, engineering technology, or related technical discipline
- Prior experience supporting or coordinating with CAD or design teams
- Ability to provide markups, redlines, or as-built feedback for drawing revisions
- Familiarity with utility standards, specifications, and QA/QC processes
- Experience with construction management, commissioning, or field engineering roles
- Exposure to AutoCAD, Micro Station, Bluebeam, or similar tools
- Utility owner/operator experience (vs. contractor-only background)
- Experience working on substation upgrades or brownfield projects
Compensation:
$36.50/hr to $44.25/hr.
Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including skills, experience, and education.
Benefit packages for this role will start on the 31st day of employment and include medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as HSA, FSA, and DCFSA account options, and 401k retirement account access with employer matching.
