Broadcast Technology Specialist

Position Summary:
The Broadcast Technology Specialist works under the dual direction of the Broadcast Engineer and the Academic Professional to provide administrative and technical support for the college’s broadcast and video production operations. The role manages daily equipment flow in the Field Equipment Supply Room (FESR) and provides advanced engineering support for broadcast studios and newsroom.
Supervise day‑to‑day operation of the college’s FESR, including:
- Train and supervise student workers at the check‑in/check‑out desk and devise work schedules.
- Conduct transactions at the desk during high‑volume periods or when student workers are absent.
- Manage support contracts and maintenance records for field equipment.
- Make payments for repairs and purchase new equipment following UGA procurement policies.
Support production infrastructure within TV studios and newsroom, with tasks such as:
- Maintain routers, cables, frame syncs, signal converters, distribution amplifiers, and intercoms/IFB.
- Handle HD‑SDI and NDI video installations, switchers, audio mixers, and studio lighting.
- Triage damaged equipment from FESR and newsroom and facilitate repairs.
- Perform deep‑access maintenance, including crawling behind sets and descending into basement corridors to trace cabling.
Provide technical support for live/recorded broadcasts and events, including:
- Execute complex equipment setups for sporting events, climbing ladders to press boxes and running cables.
- Utilize personal vehicle to transport equipment to remote sites.
- Assist with newsroom production practices and workflow.
- Assist in studio opening and lockup procedures.
Assist faculty, staff, and students with setup and breakdown of production equipment for classes and extracurricular activities, and instruct them on proper operation.
Other Duties as AssignedSupport departmental and college operational needs as required.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Multiple years of experience operating and troubleshooting professional television studio and ENG/EFP systems.
- Skilled in electronic circuitry and repair facilitation.
- Familiarity with industry‑standard non‑linear editing systems such as Adobe Premiere Pro.
- Knowledge of HD‑SDI and NDI video installations, routers, frame syncs, and signal flow.
- Ability to maintain composure and make critical decisions under pressure during live broadcasts.
- Lift and carry audio/video/computer equipment up to 50 lbs.
- Stack and organize equipment on shelves and racks.
- Climb ladders for installation or maintenance of production equipment.
- Climb ladders with gear to access press boxes and run cables from high elevations.
- Crawl behind studio sets and equipment to perform testing or maintenance.
- Descend ladders into basement corridors to inspect and trace cabling.
- Bend, stoop, and kneel frequently while working in confined spaces.
