The Universal Banker serves as a full service, single point of contact in the branch for South State customers’ financial needs. The position operates in the dual capacity of a Teller and FSR providing exceptional customer service in both transactional and account management. The Universal Banker seeks to attract, expand, and retain customer relationships and is responsible for contributing to the financial growth of the bank.
ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
- Serves customers quickly, accurately, efficiently, and confidentially according to the South State Bank Service Standards.
- Knows and understands the products and services offered by the Bank, including facts and features, benefits and advantages, rules and regulations, price structure, and a simple definition of each service offered.
- Identifies customer needs and expectations by listening for clues.
- Seeks opportunities to expand customer relationships by making referrals as outlined in the goals for this position.
- Presents a neat and professional personal appearance, in accordance with bank policy.
- Ensures compliance with all banking regulations, including Regulation CC and the Bank Secrecy Act.
- Develops a strong understanding of customer-facing technology with the ability to discuss with and enroll customers in self-service options.
- Maintains a neat and orderly work area and may guide and train new tellers.
- Processes transactions for savings, checking, and loan accounts; cashes checks, processes savings withdrawals within assigned limits, and sells certified checks.
- Balances transactions daily, may service/balance ATM, and utilizes the branch capture system.
- Follows policies and procedures to complete transactions, minimize operational errors, and maintain a proper workflow.
- Follows the branch’s security and audit procedures and understands the function and operation of the security devices.
- Handles stop payments, wire transfers, and other maintenance functions within assigned limits.
- Explains policies and procedures to customers, resolves complaints with courtesy and discretion, and directs difficult problems to appropriate sources for assistance.
- Calls customer development attempts to their daily real-time and produces accurate records and reports.
- One year of teller or cash handling experience and six months of customer relationship building or sales experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in the Teller II and basic FSR job functions.
- Additional responsibilities may include Vault Responsibilities or Back‑Up Vault Responsibilities.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Education:
High School diploma or equivalent. - Experience:
Cash handling, sales, customer service; previous banking experience preferred. - Specific Knowledge:
Good interpersonal skills, good computer skills, ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.

- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to stand and/or sit for long periods of time.
- Must be able to effectively access and interpret information on computer screens, documents, reports, and cash denominations, and identify customers.
This position is most likely in an open lobby area with an individual workstation. It is located inside a cooled and heated facility with the ability to go to a break room or restroom during breaks.
TRAVELTravel may be required to attend meetings or training as needed.
