Deputy Sheriff Grade 17 $47,860.80 ($23.01 hr) - $51,688.00 ($24.85 hr)

Purpose of Classification: to perform protective work functions associated with protection of life and property; enforcement of federal, state, and local laws; and duties within an assigned shift or specialty which may include the Patrol Division, Traffic Division, Warrant Division, Courthouse Security, School Resource Officer.

Responsibilities
  • Enforces all applicable codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations (traffic and criminal) to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security.
  • Patrols designated areas via motor vehicle or on foot to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations.
  • Prevents/discovers crime; apprehends, arrests and processes criminals, fugitives, and offenders; writes citations.
  • Responds to calls relayed by dispatchers (domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, missing persons searches, rescue operations, public service duties, stranded motorists, etc.).
  • Conducts preliminary investigations; interviews victims, complainants, and witnesses; takes statements; gathers information and evidence; secures crime scenes.
  • Enforces vehicle parking and operating laws; uses radar/laser speed detection units to enforce speed limits.
  • Inspects premises of residential/commercial buildings/properties to detect suspicious conditions.
  • Provides traffic control and police protection for events; provides security/escort services as appropriate.
  • Participates in court activities; testifies in judicial proceedings.
  • Serves criminal/civil warrants.
  • Administers first aid and CPR as necessary.
  • Maintains patrol vehicle, uniform, weapons, and equipment; transports prisoners, community members, or others as required.
  • May participate as a member of Sheriff's Response Team (S.R.T.) and respond to emergency situations requiring special weapons and tactical team assistance; participates in regular training.
  • Provides assistance and backup to other deputies or departments; substitutes for co-workers; performs flexible unit assignments; provides emergency response on a 24-hour basis as needed.
  • Assists public service agencies (e.g., fire departments, city police, state patrol, EMS) as appropriate.
  • Confers with supervisors to obtain information or resolve problems; communicates via radio, telephone, pager, or other channels for emergency response and critical incident communications.
  • Communicates effectively over law enforcement radio channels; initiates and responds to radio communications.
  • Creates/maintains positive public relations; educates the public on laws, crime prevention, and related topics.
  • Responds to questions, complaints, and requests for information/assistance from the public, news media, court personnel, attorneys, inmates, and other parties.
  • Operates a computer to research, review, enter, and modify information in databases.
  • Processes documentation per procedures; distributes documentation or maintains records as appropriate.
  • Prepares reports, logs, citations, forms, and other documents; maintains files and logs; performs clerical duties.
  • Maintains manuals, policies, procedures, bulletins, and map books for reference/review.
  • Maintains inventory of departmental supplies and initiates requests for materials.
  • Attends shift meetings, training, and seminars to stay knowledgeable and current with policies and laws; reads professional literature and maintains affiliations.
  • Performs vehicle and area searches to locate illegal contraband; participates in investigations and crime control activities; conducts interviews to identify additional suspects.
  • Works with specialized canine units to detect drugs, conduct searches, control suspects, provide crowd control, and protect personnel; trains and handles dogs.
  • Assignment to Warrant Division may include reviewing/examining warrants, serving warrants, transporting detainees, data entry, and maintaining warrant records.
