The Cobb County Department of Public Safety E911 Emergency Communications Center invites you to explore a career as an Emergency Communications Officer. This developing career field is ideal for a person with strong communication and multi‑tasking skills and the ability to work under stressful conditions.
Applicants will be scheduled by the Employment Relations Unit to complete a pre‑employment skills assessment. Candidates must also be age 18 at the time of hire and must pass the assessment.
Responsibilities- Answer incoming emergency and non‑emergency voice and Telecommunication Device for the Deaf (TDD) calls; determine the nature of the call and correct signal or code; enter information into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system; and advise supervisors of all priority calls.
- Provide lifesaving and pre‑arrival instructions to callers in emergency medical situations; remain available to callers while units are en route; check medical status.
- Forward information to the appropriate emergency response units or agencies; process requests from officers or deputies through the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC); assist the public with requests.
- Utilize a computer to enter and retrieve data; sort and file records; assist callers with transactions and information relating to police, fire, and emergency medical services activity.
- Identify incorrect or outdated information in the CAD; complete update forms for changes of street names and/or addresses; submit to supervision for verification.
- Testify in court as the owner of a voice‑on and E‑911 recording or as a witness that a call was received.
- Dispatch the appropriate agency personnel to the scene through use of radio and CAD system; coordinate multi‑unit and multi‑jurisdictional response calls; maintain awareness of available response units; maintain contact with units to provide information and instructions regarding emergencies; assist in the coordination of correct response.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by one year of work experience that demonstrates the ability to maintain steady employment in any field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Must obtain and maintain the following certifications: GCIC and NCIC Terminal Operator;
Basic Communications Officer; TDD/TTY; and CPR.
Must be able to exert moderate physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, prolonged standing, and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects or materials of moderate weight (12‑20 pounds).
Sensory RequirementsSome tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental FactorsEssential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
