HR Classification & Compensation Director

The University of Georgia (UGA), a public research university located in Athens, Georgia, is seeking an experienced HR professional to serve as the HR Classification & Compensation Director. This role leads the Compensation and Classification team within the Office of Human Resources, ensuring competitive, equitable, and compliant pay structures and classifications for 7,700 staff and 41,000+ students.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent plus 12 years of professional HR experience, including 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of U.S. and Georgia employment law, compensation and classification standards.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder‑management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Compensation & classification experience in a higher‑education environment.
  • Related professional certification (e.g., Certified Compensation Professional).
  • Experience with compensation management software such as Comp Analyst and Payfactors.
  • Proficiency with Workday and other HCM systems.
  • Familiarity with University System of Georgia (USG) and UGA policies.
Position Summary

The HR Classification & Compensation Director oversees the UHR Compensation and Classification team, responsible for policy development, job evaluation, salary surveys, and compliance with federal, state, and University policies. Reporting to the Senior Director of Compensation, Classification, and HRIS, the incumbent maintains a competitive, equitable compensation and classification structure by guiding data collection, analysis, and market studies.

Key Responsibilities Supervision & Unit Operations (approximately 50%)
  • Plan, direct, supervise, and coordinate work activities of Compensation and Classification staff.
  • Set quality, communication, and service expectations for the unit.
  • Assign work, establish priorities, and monitor progress.
  • Oversee campus‑facing review processes, ensuring clear communication to stakeholders.
  • Provide coaching, performance management, and staff evaluations.
Compensation & Classification (approximately 30%)
  • Provide operational leadership and guidance for compensation and classification structures, job reviews, and salary analysis.
  • Recommend strategies to the Senior Director regarding classification and compensation.
  • Offer guidance and resolution on escalated issues.
  • Direct salary and market analyses to support decisions.
  • Participate in related projects and committees.
Training, Resources & Process Improvement (approximately 10%)
  • Lead development of training materials for the team.
  • Establish standard operating procedures in coordination with the Senior Director.
  • Enhance intake systems and workflows to improve efficiencies and transparency.
Policy & Compliance (approximately 10%)
  • Update, maintain, and recommend classification and compensation policies.
  • Analyze policies, regulations, and best practices to recommend competitive plans.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, USG, and UGA regulations and reporting requirements.
