The Georgia Advanced Computing Resource Center (GACRC), a division of Enterprise Information Technology Services at the University of Georgia, seeks a skilled Linux Systems Administrator (Specialist) to join our research computing operations team. GACRC supports advanced computing for more than 500 research groups across the university.

Summary

The GACRC supports advanced computing needs of more than 500 research groups across the university. Our core infrastructure includes two Linux-based high-performance computing (HPC) clusters and a multi-tiered research storage environment. Working as part of a collaborative team, the Systems Administrator will contribute to the administration, monitoring, maintenance, and troubleshooting of a wide range of research computing systems—including compute clusters, parallel/clustered file systems, high-speed interconnects, GPU-accelerated systems, database servers, and a virtualized environment supporting GACRC services.

Responsibilities

Linux Systems Administration
  • Share responsibility for administration of HPC Linux clusters.
  • Share responsibility for administration of ancillary Linux systems (logging, monitoring, reporting, resource management, etc.).
  • Administer servers and storage supporting special projects.
  • Administer the internal GACRC VMware environment.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for system operations and procedures.
  • Respond to outages and urgent system issues.
Storage Systems Administration
  • Share responsibility for Tier-1 high-performance storage platforms.
  • Share responsibility for Tier-2/3 storage, backup infrastructure, and the tape archival environment.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for storage operations and procedures.
  • Respond to outages and urgent storage-related issues.
General User Support
  • Indirectly support users by collaborating with GACRC support staff to ensure stable, well-maintained systems that enable effective use of GACRC resources.
New Technologies and Innovation
  • Evaluate, test, and recommend emerging technologies for new or improved services.
  • Participate in technical discussions and product evaluations related to HPC, storage, and supporting technologies to advance the GACRC mission.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent and 2 years of professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Four or more years of Linux systems administration experience in an academic HPC environment, including experience with Slurm.
  • Experience supporting common HPC ecosystem technologies: GPU accelerators, job schedulers (Slurm), cluster provisioning (Warewulf), containers (Apptainer, Podman), web gateways (Open OnDemand), RDMA, Infini Band, etc.
  • Experience administering HPC or Linux systems within regulated research environments (e.g., NIH-controlled data, CMS RIF data) and working knowledge of NIST SP 800-171 security requirements.
  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Strong Linux systems administration experience with advanced scripting or programming skills.
  • Experience supporting large Linux/Unix server environments; if not from a research computing setting, enterprise-scale systems administration experience is required.
  • Experience with network-attached or parallel storage systems, including one or more of the following: ZFS, Lustre, Ceph, or other clustered file systems.
  • Experience operating VMware environments using vSphere and ESXi.
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting Linux authentication services and Active Directory integration (PAM, SSSD).
  • Familiarity with common network services and protocols such as DNS, DHCP, NFS, SMB/CIFS, and VPNs.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
