Position Summary
The Systems and Infrastructure Engineer supports Linux‑based systems and related infrastructure that underpin GALILEO, GIL, and related statewide library services. This position supports production and non‑production environments across on‑premises, vendor‑hosted, and cloud‑connected systems. Working as part of a collaborative team, the engineer contributes to the administration, monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting, and automation of a wide range of systems and services, including Linux servers, virtualization platforms, authentication and access services, proxy services, application environments, and related infrastructure.
The role works closely with the Systems Architect, developers, and other team members to support existing services, implement improvements, and build operational knowledge over time. The engineer also supports systems and services that interface with the Library Services Platform, emphasizing service continuity, access, integrations, and operational consistency.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent and 2 years of professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications- BA/BS in Computer Science, Information Science, or related discipline.
- Four years of experience administering Linux servers in a production, academic, or comparable environment.
- Two years of experience with Linux‑based hypervisors and command‑line tools for monitoring and troubleshooting virtualized environments.
- Linux Systems and Infrastructure Operations: Provides day‑to‑day support of server systems and related infrastructure, including monitoring systems and services, reviewing logs and alerts, and responding to outages or urgent operational issues as needed. Administers user accounts, permissions, storage access, and other system resources while maintaining documentation, inventories, and operational procedures. Maintains security, stability, and reliability of Linux‑based infrastructure by applying patches, updates, and configuration changes.
- Automation, Platform, and Integration Support: Implements, automates, and supports infrastructure, application environments, and related service platforms that support GALILEO, GIL, DLG, and related statewide library services. Utilizes and maintains Ansible playbooks, scripts, branch‑based deployment using Git Lab CI or similar tools, and other operational tooling used to manage configuration, access, deployments, inventories, containerized services, and repeatable support tasks. Deploys, configures, maintains, monitors, and troubleshoots locally hosted, cloud‑hosted, and partner‑hosted platforms and integrations, including authentication, proxy, network access workflows, and container‑based application environments.
Coordinates with developers, vendors, campus partners, product owners, leadership, and member institutions to resolve issues, implement changes, and support service continuity and modernization efforts. - Collaboration, Support, and Communication: Communicates regularly with stakeholders regarding work progress, technical issues, risks, and service impacts. Works effectively within an iterative, Agile‑inspired team environment and coordinates with developers, support staff, partner units, and other stakeholders on supported systems and services. Contributes documentation and shared knowledge that improve continuity within the team. Participates in relevant meetings, training sessions, working groups, and organization‑wide communication.
- Professional Development and Emerging Technologies: Stays current on trends in infrastructure, systems administration, automation, observability, and library technology through training, professional development, and related learning opportunities. Participates in evaluation and practical use of emerging tools, including AI‑assisted tooling, to improve operational efficiency, documentation, troubleshooting, or automation workflows. Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes and needs in the department and organization by assuming similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.
