Position Summary

This position has an expert level of technical knowledge and skills for the operation and maintenance of the UGA campus building chilled water production system. The system is comprised of various sized chillers, cooling towers, chilled water and condenser water pumps, distribution piping, control valves, actuators, the systems automation control and the chiller microprocessor control, and other components. This position has an expert level of mechanical skills and technical knowledge to monitor, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair the system at the district plants and at various buildings on campus.

This position works independently to complete tasks within this competency.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and 5 years of related experience.

Technical Knowledge & Skills
  • Chiller and cooling tower operation, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Chilled water and condenser water treatment.
  • Troubleshoot and install chiller sensors, boards and relays.
  • Troubleshooting, testing and assisting in the commissioning of new building chilled water production systems.
  • Building Automation System chilled water production control.
  • Reading and interpreting mechanical plans and wiring diagrams.
  • Analyzing and correcting communication issues.
  • Analyzing and measuring fluid and air dynamics.
  • Adherence to and the implementation of EPA refrigerant handling guidelines and having a universal refrigerant license.
Responsibilities
  • Perform checks and take corrective action to ensure the chilled water production systems and associated cooling towers operate per designed flow, volume, and temperature requirements. (45%)
  • Install, maintain, and repair the building chilled water mechanical components such as rods, condensers, and evaporators. (25%)
  • Diagnose and solve a wide range of operational issues that arise from the mechanical, electrical, and automated controls of the building chilled water production systems such as chiller sensors, boards, starters, relays, and actuators. (20%)
  • Troubleshoot, test, and assist in the commissioning of new building chilled water production systems. (5%)
  • Assist and support with other duties as assigned by the Building HVAC Shop Manager. (5%)
Physical Demands
  • Lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, working over head, climbing stairs, using regular and/or extended ladders throughout 8 hour work shift.
  • Lift up to 75 lbs during a work shift.
