Position Summary

This is painting work of journeyman level. Work includes assignments involving employment of all standard trade practices and skills. The work often includes finishing surfaces where standards of beauty, harmony, and workmanship are exacting. The work is performed under general direction and is subject to inspection while in progress and upon completion for appearance and durability.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And/or Competencies
  • Considerable knowledge of the characteristics and uses of various kinds of paints, varnishes, enamel, and shellacs.
  • Considerable knowledge of proper methods of preparing various surfaces for painting and finishing.
  • Some knowledge of glazing and paper hanging techniques.
  • Skill in painting with hand brushes, rollers, and spray guns.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and all other duties as needed by supervisor and/or foreman.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, squat, climb stairs, work from standard and/or extended ladder, work with hands above head and lift up to 75 lbs during a normal 8-hour shift.
  • Ability to work under adverse weather conditions (hot, rain, cold).
  • Driving as needed to perform job duties.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Includes cleaning and preparing surfaces to be painted by sandpaper, steel wool or soap and water; sandblasting surfaces preparatory to painting.
  • Paints interior and exterior walls and ceilings of buildings with brush, roller, or spray gun; may varnish, stain, shellac or finish desks, doors, cabinets, moldings, and floors.
  • Trims windows and doors; caulks cracks and glazes windows.
  • Finishes sheet rock.
  • Performs incidental duties such as erecting and moving scaffolds, washing walls and cleaning up after job.
  • Performs any other type of work related to building maintenance as assigned by supervisor.
