Overview

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Assistant Director of Facilities will ensure that the facilities maintenance department meets the needs of staff, students/patients, and visitors. This role oversees compliance with federal/state regulations and Joint Commission standards, develops long‑range infrastructure plans, and manages preventive maintenance programs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent plus 10 years of professional experience, including 3 years of supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree in facilities management or a two‑year vocational/technical degree plus five years of work and supervisory experience in a skilled trade.
  • Extensive knowledge of project management.
  • 3‑5 years of progressively responsible experience in facilities operation and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory and compliance standards (Joint Commission, OSHA, NFPA, EPA, local/state building codes).
Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Facilities supervises the Facilities Maintenance Manager and Building Services Supervisor, ensuring facilities are structurally sound, operationally efficient, well‑maintained, and safe.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Five or more years of building construction and maintenance experience, preferably in an educational or hospital setting.
  • Extensive knowledge of Joint Commission accreditation standards.
  • Proficiency maintained by attending an annual four‑hour state‑approved electrical CE class.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
Physical Demands
  • Able to sit, stand, and walk for long durations.
  • Able to bend, stoop, and climb stairs.
  • Able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to utilize standard computer keyboard and office equipment.
  • Able to see objects closely, such as reading.
  • Able to perform fine motor skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Facilities Maintenance Oversight
    • Manage steps to keep the facility well‑maintained and compliant with regulations, including Joint Commission standards.
    • Ensure compliance with fire alarm panels, emergency power systems, smoke/heating detectors, and sprinkler systems.
    • Recommend maintenance, repair, improvement, or replacement projects and develop long‑range plans.
    • Oversee vendor contracts and ensure contracted work meets UHC needs within budget.
    • Manage the UHC vehicle fleet for operational readiness.
  • Leadership and Staff Supervision
    • Review payroll and operations budgets; report discrepancies.
    • Provide direct supervision to two full‑time staff members.
    • Promote engagement, development, and retention of staff.
  • Environmental Services and Sustainability
    • Ensure utility systems are serviced and inspected per state and federal regulations.
    • Identify and present waste‑reduction opportunities to UHC Administration.
    • Serve on the Environment of Care Committee; oversee the UHC Safety Officer’s duties.
    • Train Facilities Maintenance staff on infection prevention and medical facility cleaning.
  • Staff, Patient, and Facility Security
    • Manage the security team and access control for employees and the building.
    • Oversee the building‑wide panic alarm system and security cameras.
    • Develop relationships with the UGA Police Department.
  • Building Projects and Renovation Oversight
    • Collaborate with procurement to develop contract work and analyze estimates.
    • Serve as project coordinator for major renovations or building projects.
    • Act as liaison between UHC, external UGA departments, and outside contractors.
    • Prioritize and present projects for capital planning; oversee vendor orders.
