Position Summary
The Science Learning Center (SLC) is a state-of-the-art facility designed to be the home for introductory STEM courses offered by several academic units across campus, particularly from Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, Odum School of Ecology, and the College of Engineering. The building houses two auditoria that are suitable for active learning at scale, two scale-up classrooms, 31 instructional laboratories, and student study spaces.
The Building Manager for the SLC has primary responsibility for planning, coordinating and supervising the building program. This includes managing the building staff, coordinating technical staff (A/V and IT) in support of building activities and classes, acting as liaison to the Facilities Management Division (FMD) concerning facilities operations and maintenance issues, overseeing environmental and life safety regulation compliance including coordination of emergency plans and operations, and coordination of special projects as they arise.
Manages on-site student worker staff, including hiring, onboarding, funding, scheduling, terminating, and day‑to‑day oversight of the SLC help desk team, ensuring high‑quality classroom support services for Science Learning Center building operations. Work involves developing and documenting appropriate policies and programs, monitoring the building and grounds, responding to emergency situations, managing the procurement and inventory of supplies and equipment, and scheduling and monitoring sophisticated access control, security, and fire alarm systems.
Assignments are carried out under established policies and procedures, and the employee must exercise quick, independent, and sound judgment, and display initiative to resolve emergency situations that arise. The building manager is expected to work at hours as needed and to be recallable for duty in 30 minutes to respond to after‑hour emergencies or security issues.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent and 2 years of professional experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or CompetenciesKnowledge of building operations, maintenance and security procedures; demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, patrons, and staff; demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills. Intermediate knowledge of PC and Mac desktop and laptop computing is preferred. Working knowledge using software packages for office use, preferably Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel; experience using software and maintaining hardware for building access control and management.
PhysicalDemands
Sitting for long periods of time at a computer terminal is required. Position also entails lifting boxes weighing approximately 40 pounds each.
Responsibilities- Document and manage building operations and support by supervising and resolving problems concerning facility usage, operations, equipment malfunction, etc.
- Supervise assistant building manager and coordinate support of instruction within the building with A/V and IT staff. Maintain appropriate budgets, files, and records. Oversee student worker staff, including hiring, onboarding, funding, scheduling, termination, and day‑to‑day oversight of the SLC help desk team.
- Manage appropriate procurement for the SLC (both income and expenditures) by researching purchases, maintaining budget paperwork, tracking purchases, and appropriately using P‑card.
- Manage the building access and emergency preparedness program by providing on‑site leadership for response to emergency situations, monitoring and responding to the alarm systems, developing detailed emergency procedures for the building, training other building staff to provide basic assistance, and handling related issues and problems according to departmental and university safety and security policies.
- Serve as the Office of Instruction contact person for the instructional south wing of Cedar St. Building
A. Will be the emergency and facilities management contact when issues arise in the south wing of Cedar St. Building A, a unit housing 19 active learning classrooms. - Other duties as assigned.
