Ameri Corps VISTA members will be selected to support organizations and initiatives fighting food insecurity and food waste in Athens, GA. Hosted by the University of Georgia’s Office of Service-Learning, VISTAs provide year-long, full-time, in‑person, capacity‑building support for local organizations that help meet food‑security needs through a wide range of efforts including food production and distribution.
Members work closely with UGA faculty, staff, students, and community members and will be placed at local or campus organizations such as UGArden, the university’s community‑campus organic teaching farm. Each VISTA will have a primary placement but will collaborate with other sites as needed. Duties include
- Developing and implementing site‑specific plans to recruit, manage, and supervise volunteers for food recovery, production, preparation, and distribution.
- Conducting development and fundraising activities to support the organization’s work in combating food waste and food insecurity.
- Performing needs assessments and improving data quality related to community food insecurity and waste.
- Creating new programming and partnerships across organizations in the food‑security, production, and waste arena.
- Developing, enhancing, and disseminating communications, including social media, to promote the organization and the broader network of food distributions.
- Managing communication about food distribution opportunities, recruiting and training volunteers for meal, grocery, or food distributions, and supporting new programs.

Qualifications & Requirements- Some college education or equivalent experience.
- Strong interest and skills in volunteer recruitment and management, community needs assessment, partnership development, food production or distribution, and communication.
- Minimum age 18.
- U.S. citizenship or permanent legal status.
