Experience in handling animals in a patient care setting.

Position Summary

This incumbent is responsible for the care of client-owned animals brought to the Pet Health Center for general veterinary care including spay/neuter procedures, dental, and outpatient surgery.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

This employee provides hands‑on care and skills as a Veterinary Assistant while aiding in the care and treatment of patients at the Pet Health Center.

Physical Demands
  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Stand, crouch, kneel, or lift heavy patients.
  • Work with medical equipment and isolation tools, along with cleaning solutions.

Duties and Responsibilities

Percentage of time: 30%

  • Assists Registered Veterinary Technicians in nursing care to help manage all aspects of the patient's treatment.
  • Perform day to day Veterinary Assistant duties in the PHC that consists of dental procedures, otic lavage, wound clipping, prepping, flushing, bandaging, casts, sedate, suture skin, catheterize, venipuncture, injections, medicating, CPR, maintaining of airway and circulatory system management, drug dosage calculations, reconstituting and administering drugs, I.V. fluids, assist clinicians with neurology examinations.

Percentage of time: 25%

  • Training senior veterinary students, veterinary technician students, and new nursing staff in the PHC.
  • Assisting and instructing the new employees, senior veterinary students and veterinary technician students with the various duties performed in the Pet Health Center; receiving, patient examinations, dentistry, dental radiology, obtaining specimens and testing.
