Position Summary

The Microbiology Department invites applications for a Laboratory Manager to support its teaching laboratories. This position is essential to maintaining high standards of laboratory readiness, safety, and instructional quality. Primary responsibilities include preparing microbiological and specialized media, chemical reagents, and laboratory materials while ensuring sterility and rigorous quality control. The Laboratory Manager will troubleshoot preparation issues, monitor consistency across lab sections, and maintain best practices for aseptic technique.

Additional duties include managing inventory, ordering supplies, and overseeing the proper disposal of biohazardous and chemical waste in compliance with safety regulations. This role also involves coordinating routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment, as well as handling weekly setup and breakdown of teaching labs and general facility upkeep. The Laboratory Manager will assist with the orientation and training of Graduate Student Teaching Assistants, ensuring adherence to laboratory protocols and standards, and will supervise student employees who support lab preparation and operations.

Responsibilities
  • Preparation of microbiological media and chemical reagents for teaching labs using sterile technique.
  • Washing glassware and plasticware used in the teaching labs.
  • Ordering supplies for all lab courses; managing inventory through the Campus Optics system; assessing consumable stocks on a weekly basis.
  • General maintenance of the teaching labs and associated workspace; cleaning labs weekly; restocking supplies such as disinfectants, stains, and cleaning lab coats; arranging for lab coat laundry.
  • Assisting with immediate lab needs during classes.
  • Training and assigning daily tasks for undergraduate student employees; supervising and approving time in OneUSG Connect each week.
  • Assisting in orientation and training for graduate lab teaching assistants.
  • Supervising cleanup of teaching labs at the end of each semester; performing periodic cleanouts during the semester.
  • Maintaining a list for equipment repairs; arranging annual maintenance and repairing equipment such as microscopes, pipettors, plate pourers, and fume hoods.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of related experience.
  • Preferred: BS or MS in Microbiology or a related field.
Physical Demands

Standing for long hours and occasionally lifting more than forty (40) pounds.
