Research Technician - Arthi Kanthasamy
Position Summary:
This position will serve as the research technician in the lab of Dr. Arthi Kanthasamy in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. The lab conducts NIH‑funded basic research and translational studies on neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory mechanisms in Parkinson’s disease and related disorders, including biomarker discovery in human samples and testing novel therapeutics in preclinical animal models.
- Organize and assist in the implementation of research projects, including data collection and project management.
- Read and develop a basic understanding of research project protocols.
- Maintain accurate records on every aspect of research projects.
- Proper disposal of biohazard waste.
- Perform inventory, and provide basic maintenance and ordering of research supplies and equipment.
- Assist graduate students and other senior research personnel with their experiments.
- Conduct multiple behavioral, neurobiochemical, and histological assays.
- Perform experimental design and execution, assay optimization and validation.
- Manage data collection and generate reports.
- Communicate professionally with supervisor, graduate students, and research personnel regarding workflow, time limitations, and project status.
- Maintain a positive attitude and calm demeanor during stressful situations.
- Accept constructive criticism and maintain accurate records on every aspect of research projects.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Minimum:
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through apprenticeship, a 2‑year degree, or professional certificate. - Preferred:
Prior experience with mouse work; strong background in experimental design and assay execution. - Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Experience and willingness to perform research; effective communication; attention to detail; ability to work in a sometimes‑stressful environment; critical thinking; confidentiality; basic computer knowledge (MS Word, Excel).
- Lift up to 30 pounds.
- Manual dexterity for small delicate equipment or large heavy objects.
- Wear protective gear (mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles).
- Work for long periods with arms extended.
- Flexible work schedule Monday–Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm; flexibility may be required.
