This position is responsible for parasite production and maintenance of filarial life cycles. Conducting experiments independently or with minimal supervision. This position will also supervise and train undergraduates in these procedures.
Minimum QualificationsRequires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies- Manual dexterity
- Previous laboratory animal, parasitology/entomology experience
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs and Graph Pad Prism
- Experience using a microscope/dissecting scope
- Previous management of filarial life cycles
- Knowledge of larval migration inhibition assay
- Extensive knowledge of experimental design of both in vivo and in vitro experiments with filarial parasites
Occasional lifting of boxes.
Duties/Responsibilities- 65% of time: Manage and conduct independent research projects.
- 20% of time: Assist in maintaining the life cycles of mosquitoes and filariae.
- 20% of time: Coordinate and prepare shipments of filarial materials to researchers.
- 20% of time: Laboratory maintenance – cleaning and sterilizing glassware and equipment; stocking and ordering supplies.
- 20% of time: Restraint, handling, and bleeding of laboratory rodents, dogs, and cats.
- 15% of time: External training coordinator.
- 15% of time: Maintain animal inventory records and order animals as needed.
- 15% of time: Cross-train on other laboratory procedures and assist in procedures as needed.
- 15% of time: Maintain equipment and supply inventories and repair records.
- 15% of time: Perform related duties as required and assist PI, Associate, and Assistant Research Scientists as needed.
