The Center for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases (CTEGD) at the University of Georgia is one of the largest international centers of research focused on diseases of poverty. Researchers and students work together on some of the most important causes of human suffering around the world, including malaria, schistosomiasis, African sleeping sickness, Chagas disease, cryptosporidiosis, toxoplasmosis, leishmaniasis, and filariasis.

Responsibilities- Maintain and propagate various life cycle stages of Hymenolepis diminuta.
- Perform rodent-handling duties.
- Maintain in vitro parasite cultures.
- Maintain and organize laboratory inventory, including ordering.
- Responsible for general lab maintenance duties including making common reagents, washing and sterilization of glassware, lab waste management, managing DNA sequencing, and managing deliveries to the lab.
- Assist laboratory personnel by independently performing a variety of cellular and molecular biological techniques, and helping with general lab duties.
- Attend lab meetings and other meetings as required.
The Laboratory Technician I will be responsible for supporting lab members toward our collective goal of understanding stem cell regulation in the rat tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification In Position- Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or a related field.
- Experience in microscopy, molecular biology techniques, and recombinant protein expression and purification.
- Rodent/animal handling experience preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Strong analytical and basic computer skills.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
Work is normally performed in a wet laboratory environment. Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).
