Position SummaryThis position will serve as a lab manager in the Evolutionary Immunogenomics Lab (PI: Dr. Tauras Vilgalys) in the Department of Genetics. This is a heavily collaborative research environment that employs immunological and genomic approaches to understand the evolution of primates and other species. Our goal is to discover how natural populations resist infectious diseases and use those insights to improve human health.
Responsibilities include conducting research, developing new genomics and immunological assays, and overseeing general management of the lab. The successful candidate will play an essential role in establishing the wet lab, generating new data, and helping train undergraduate and rotation students.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and/or CompetenciesAbility to effectively communicate, maintain accurate documentation, and pay attention to detail. Experience in a biological research lab, including molecular biology, cell culture, immunological assays, and genomic library preparation. Ability to work independently on research and lab management tasks.
Physical DemandsNormal lab activity, which includes sitting/standing for long periods and wearing protective equipment (gloves, masks, and safety goggles).
Scientific Research- Working independently, organize and assist in the implementation of research projects, including data collection and project management.
- Read and develop a basic understanding of research project protocols.
- Maintain accurate records on research projects.
- Independently carry out and troubleshoot experiments, including developing new genomic and immunological assays.
- Generate data for projects in the lab.
Percentage of time: 40%
Lab Maintenance- Maintain lab safety compliance, inventory and purchase of lab supplies, and ensure overall organization (wash glassware, prepare basic solutions and media, take away the trash, etc.). Serve as the point of contact for administrative and infrastructure needs.
Percentage of time: 40%
Communication and Professional Development- Professionally communicate with the supervisor, graduate students, and research personnel concerning workflow, time limitations, and project status.
- Opportunities to be involved in writing journal articles and traveling to present research at professional meetings and conferences.
Percentage of time: 10%
Mentoring and Supervision- Mentor junior researchers in experimental techniques.
- Serve as a resource of practical experimental knowledge for new lab members.
- Supervision of any laboratory technicians, student workers, and undergraduate researchers.
