Duties and Responsibilities- Tend to plants in greenhouse. Plant, weed, fertilize, water, pollination, harvest, disease screening, and data collection. (Percentage of time: 30)
- Collect plant samples, label, flag, stake, data collection, pollinations, making breeding crosses, disease screening. (Percentage of time: 30)
- Lab Protocols—Nucleic acid extraction, and other vegetable breeding related research. (Percentage of time: 20)
- Lab maintenance and chores – wash glassware, autoclave supplies, prepare basic solutions and media, take away trash, etc. (Percentage of time: 20)
Selected applicant will provide assistance in greenhouse research activities including potting, planting, fertilizing, watering, weeding, pollinating, data collection, disease screening, and harvesting plants belonging to different breeding populations. Will assist in keeping greenhouse space neat, orderly and weed free. Will provide assistance with basic field and laboratory research as requested including tissue sample collection, pollinations, basic data collection, disease screening, and setting up field studies including labeling and placing flags, stakes and markers.
Will assist with basic lab protocols including molecular biology as requested and will be responsible for basic lab maintenance and chores including washing glassware, preparing simple solutions, preparing media, autoclaving supplies and waste, taking trash to dumpster, etc. to keep laboratory space neat, orderly and clean.
- Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position: Undergraduate students with majors in plant biology, agriculture, crop and soil science; prior lab experience is preferred but not mandatory.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or
Competencies:
Basic knowledge about molecular biology and plant breeding would be desirable.
Lift up to 50 lbs. and withstand outside elements for extended periods of time. Driving.
