Position Title

Assistant Research Scientist - Ferguson Lab

Position Summary

This is a senior research position in a molecular biology research laboratory studying and performing diagnostic services in detecting and identifying avian pathogens, viruses, and bacteria as well as research in vaccine development and epidemiology of avian mycoplasma. This position will engage in conceptualization, design, implementation and troubleshooting of research protocols; preparation and analysis of research data; preparation and presentation of data at research conferences, and for manuscript preparation and grant submission.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD in avian medicine, infectious diseases epidemiology or related field of study is required.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and/or Competencies
  • Standard laboratory skills as well as expertise in molecular biological techniques is required
    .
  • Background supervising research projects, including experimental design is required
    .
  • General computer knowledge is required
    .
Physical Demands

Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time. Able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • 60%:
    Performing independent studies (in consultation with PI) focused on avian mycoplasma vaccine development, development of novel diagnostic techniques and avian mycoplasma immune response and avian mycoplasma epidemiology.
  • 30%:
    Data analysis, preparation of oral or written reports, and manuscript preparation.
  • 10%:
    Coordinating/integrating research lab projects with other personnel, including assisting with training of other research personnel including graduate and undergraduate students. Teach graduate course, Problems in Population Health (POPH 8900), focusing upon management issues related to maintaining the health of animal populations.
