Position Summary

A Research Technician will assist with projects and tasks in the laboratory, greenhouse, and office to support a plant genomics research laboratory. This role involves responsible preparation of culture media, reagents, buffers, and other solutions, and performing tissue culture while maintaining collections of clonally propagated plants.

Responsibilities
  • Greenhouse duties: plant, maintain, and harvest plants; collect material for experiments; perform crosses; mix soil; fill pots; and clean greenhouses/growth chambers.
  • Laboratory duties: prepare culture media, reagents, buffers, and other solutions; perform tissue culture; maintain colonies of clonally propagated plants in good health.
  • Administrative duties: independently maintain inventory and order supplies; keep lab environment clean and sterile; assist with shipping and receiving, mail retrieval, and phone answering.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent and at least 2 years of related experience.
  • Preferred: some college education; experience in laboratory, greenhouse, and aseptic technique.
  • Proficiency in laboratory, greenhouse, and aseptic technique; strong organizational skills; basic computer skills.
  • Effective communication and multitasking; meticulous, punctual, reliable; strong attention to detail; knowledge of basic plant life cycle and genetics.
Physical Demands
  • Utilize computer technology for all applications; lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Employment Details

Full-time employee on a limited-term (one year) appointment expected to be renewed annually contingent on grant support and project needs. The position is located in Athens, Georgia.
