Position Summary
The Shamblin lab seeks laboratory assistants for wildlife and fisheries sample processing and DNA extractions for population genetic analyses. This position will assist graduate students and the lab manager with sample tracking, processing of blood, eggshell, skin, fin clips, and swab samples, and DNA extractions for genotyping and sequencing of fish and wildlife species of conservation concern. The assistant will also help with sample archiving and general laboratory maintenance.
Duties & Responsibilities- Sample tracking and processing for DNA extractions – 50% of time
- DNA extractions and sample archiving – 35% of time
- Dish washing and general lab maintenance – 15% of time
Candidates pursuing a BS degree in biology, genetics, marine science, or wildlife/fisheries preferred. Previous laboratory experience is a plus, but not necessary.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and CompetenciesIdeal candidates work well independently or in groups. Attention to detail is critical, despite repetitious tasks. Good organizational and interpersonal skills are essential.
Physical DemandsThis position is laboratory based. Candidates should be able to sit or stand at the bench for extended periods. This position may occasionally require lifting boxes up to 40 pounds.
