Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent and 5 years of related experience
Preferred Qualifications
* Advanced skills in molecular biology or biological sciences to include DNA isolation and purification, cloning, preparing all media and reagents.
* Previous experience in Mycoplasma research
* Bachelor's degree in Biology or science related field and at least 4 years experience in a biological research laboratory
Position Summary
This is a professional, administrative, technical and supervisory position in a biotechnology and molecular research laboratory performing research and diagnostic services in detecting and identifying avian pathogens, viruses, and bacteria. This position is responsible for the conduct of specialized testing (culture and serology) and quality control on clinical and research samples submitted to the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center. This position involves technical scientific research and animal trials for isolation and identification of avian mycoplasma.
Other responsibilities include data collection, data entry, assistance with maintaining laboratory supplies and stock solutions and communicating results with other members of the lab team. The job may occasionally involve work after hours or on weekends.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Standard laboratory skills as well as experience with molecular biological techniques is required. General computer knowledge is required. Good communication and time management skills.
Physical Demands
Ability to lift at least 25 lbs, and ability to stand or sit for long periods of time.

Supervise and assist in preparation and maintenance of cultures, culture media and reagents. Prepare and inoculate clinical samples in appropriate substrates. Perform various scientific tests and procedures (Immunofluorescence test to identify cultures).
Percentage of time 30 Duties/Responsibilities
Maintain and update standard operating procedures to ensure standards are maintained and documented. Identify quality issues and develop new protocols as necessary. Ensure clarity of procedures for lab personnel.

Prepare and maintain reagents (antigens, controls) for serological testing. Perform various scientific tests and procedures (serum plate agglutination tests, Hem agglutination inhibition).
Percentage of time 20 Duties/Responsibilities
Assist the PDRC Mycoplasma Lab in planning and implementation of research trials, including routine husbandry of research animals, inoculations, vaccinations, necropsies and data collection and analysis. Support faculty and graduate students in research goals. Assist in teaching training workshops and classes. Assist in lab cleanliness and maintenance, as well as maintaining inventory.
