Forest Health​/Silviculture Technician

Position Summary

This position is for 14 months and may be renewed for a longer period of time based on funding. The individual will serve as the research technician for forest health, silviculture, and forest productivity work, providing support in both fieldwork and lab work to two Assistant Professors and one Professor. The successful candidate will be housed in Tifton at the UGA Research Center.

• Technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or a professional certificate.

• Knowledge and basic understanding of biological systems.
• Meticulous attention to detail when handling research materials and routine techniques.
• Ability to work independently, use good judgment, and troubleshoot technical activities.
• Computer skills for data organization and report preparation.
• Ability to work well in a team and serve as liaison among various project personnel.

Stand for long periods of time, withstand hot and humid summer field conditions. Lift 50 pounds over head. May work with hazardous chemicals. Driving is required.

• Fieldwork: set up research plots (20%)
• Field work: collect tree and insect data at research plots (20%)
• Laboratory work: sort insect samples, identify insect specimens, catalog specimens (20%)
• Laboratory work: routine laboratory organizing and project preparation work (10%)
• Data entry: accurately record and store data (30%)
