Lab Tech / Assistant, Research Scientist
Position Summary
The lab manager will assist in research examining how soil microbial processes control the exchange of C and N between soils, plants, and the atmosphere. Responsibilities include ordering equipment and supplies, maintaining a safe and productive working environment, developing standard operating procedures, training new researchers, and assisting with basic field and laboratory research such as collecting soil samples, operating a portable trace gas analyzer, and processing soil samples in the laboratory.
Minimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, ecology, or a closely related discipline.
- Wet lab experience.
- Ability to work independently.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
- Procurement experience.
- No prior experience with specific lab equipment is required.
- Knowledge of basic chemistry and soil biogeochemical processes.
- Ability to troubleshoot problems independently, teach others complex lab methods, and work well as part of a team.
This position may call for occasional field work. The candidate should be able to hike for 1 mile with a 30-pound backpack.

Duties and Responsibilities- Lab work
- Preparing reagents
- Washing glassware
- Processing soil samples
- Maintaining a clean and organized lab space
- Developing standard operating procedures
- Purchasing supplies and equipment
- Purchasing laboratory equipment under the supervision of the PI
- Monitoring and purchasing needed supplies
- Maintaining instruments
- Monitor trace gas analyzers
- Use compressed gas cylinders
- Conduct preventative instrument maintenance
- Mentoring researchers in lab methods and safety
- Teaching lab safety to new researchers
- Teaching common lab methods to new researchers
- Field work
- Collecting soil samples
- Operating field instruments
Advertised Salary: $35,000 - $45,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits Eligible.
