Position SummaryThis position will support Peanut Breeding researchers within the Dept. of Crop and Soil Sciences, under the direction of Dr. Nino Brown. The primary focus of current research projects includes investigating the genetic control and influence of several agronomic and crop quality traits, development of DNA-markers for use within the breeding program, and incorporation of cutting-edge breeding and phenotyping techniques to accelerate genetic gain.
The role will interface with and assist researchers, graduate students, technicians, and student workers to accomplish common research goals. General responsibilities include routine field maintenance (cultivation, spraying, fertilization, irrigation), tissue sampling, plant and plot harvesting, peanut grading and shelling, data collection in the field and lab, seed packaging, and planting. The employee will be based at the Tifton Campus, with frequent travel to off-site locations within the peanut production regions of the state.
This position will utilize a P-card.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
- Competency in calibrating sprayers, fertilizer applicators, and related math skills.
- Competency in crop management.
- Basic mechanical, welding and carpentry skills.
- Understanding and appreciation of the precision necessary for agricultural research.
- Ability to maintain research and farm implements for optimum operation.
- Lift 50 lb items repeatedly in the heat.
- Operate and haul farm equipment.
- Bend over, walk, climb, repeatedly for long hours.
- Work outside in dusty, hot, humid conditions all day.
- Driving as needed to perform job duties.
- Preparation for and planting of breeding research plots with specialized seed research equipment.
- Monitor crop development and environmental conditions to maintain optimal and uniform growing conditions throughout the season, including irrigation, fertility, and pest management adjustments.
- Collect field data and observations related to plant growth, health, and treatment responses, ensuring consistency and accuracy across all plots.
- Manage primarily local field trials, with some activities conducted at off-site locations throughout the state.
