Position Summary

Selected applicant will provide assistance in greenhouse research activities including potting, planting, fertilizing, watering, weeding, pollinating, data collection, disease screening, and harvesting plants belonging to different breeding populations. Assist in keeping greenhouse space neat, orderly and weed‑free. Provide help with basic field and laboratory research as requested including tissue sample collection, pollinations, basic data collection, disease screening, and setting up field studies including labeling and placing flags, stakes, and markers.

Assist with basic lab protocols including molecular biology and will be responsible for basic lab maintenance and chores including washing glassware, preparing simple solutions, preparing media, autoclaving supplies and waste, taking trash to dumpster, etc., to keep laboratory space neat, orderly and clean.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain greenhouse plants: planting, weeding, fertilizing, watering, pollination, harvesting, disease screening, data collection (30% of time)
  • Collect plant samples, label, flag, stake, perform data collection, pollinations, breeding crosses, disease screening (20% of time)
  • Lab protocols: nucleic acid extraction and other vegetable breeding related research
  • Lab maintenance: wash glassware, autoclave supplies, prepare basic solutions and media, take away trash, etc.
Education and Experience

Undergraduate students with majors in plant biology, agriculture, crop and soil science; prior lab experience is preferred but not mandatory.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Basic knowledge about molecular biology and plant breeding desirable.

Physical Demands

Lift up to 50 lbs. and withstand outside elements for extended periods of time. Driving required.
