Research Scientist, Research Assistant/Associate, Biology, Lab Tech / Assistant
Position Summary: Assist graduate students, professor, and laboratory coordinator with various research projects that are ongoing in the laboratory and in the field. This will entail field collecting of insect samples, correct preparation and preservation of specimens, sorting insects in the lab, cleaning and maintaining field equipment, data entry, and microscope work. This is a limited‑term position and is contingent on funding.
Position will end September 2022.
Responsibilities:
- Field work:
Trapping, forest measurements, and collecting field data (50% of time). - Sorting and identifying insect samples in lab setting (30% of time).
- Data entry (10% of time).
- Microscope work (10% of time).
- Cleaning and maintaining field equipment.
- Driving to collection sites; overnight trips may be required.
- Willing to travel long distances in the Southeast.
Qualifications:
- Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to multitask across several projects.
- Flexibility in schedule.
- Capable of performing tasks such as examining specimens under a microscope for extended periods.
Physical Demands:
- Willing to work in extreme temperatures and endure hiking to collect trap samples located throughout the state.
- Occasional lifting of up to 50 lb boxes of traps and/or lures.
- Driving.
