Position SummaryThe vegetable entomology research laboratory conducts investigation into how pest insects affect vegetable productivity in Georgia and how to best control these pests. Current tasks include maintaining insect (e.g., whitefly and diamondback moth) colonies, collecting and processing samples and entering data. Specific tasks include rapidly identifying and counting small insects under stereo microscope magnification, maintain plant food for insect colonies, plant seeds/seedlings for colonies and/or research tests, scout, and other duties related to entomological field research.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Rapidly identify and count small insects under stereo microscope magnification.
- Assist with insect colonies.
- Plant seeds/seedlings for colonies and research tests.
- Maintain plant food for insect colonies.
- Scout for pest insects.
- Process samples (either frozen or in alcohol) on a scheduled weekly schedule.
- Check insect colonies and associated plants twice weekly.
- Participate in weekly lab meetings to determine additional duties.
High school diploma preferred.
Physical Demands- Look through the stereo microscope for hours at a time.
- Lift soil tubs and standard potting trays with full pots.
- Be punctual for assigned work times.
- Driving required; some field work may be involved.
