Job Summary

Lead onion breeding and pre-breeding research in this start‑up program, handling molecular biology, high‑throughput phenotyping, and statistical analysis to develop new varieties.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Lead onion pre‑breeding and breeding research to generate segregating populations and identify promising center rot resistance lines adapted to a short‑day environment.
  • Lead disease screening against center rot in the greenhouse and assist collaborators with genome‑edited mutant screening.
  • Assist in post‑harvest bulb quality analysis; lead marker‑assisted selection and genomic selection activities related to QTL mapping.
  • Prepare peer‑reviewed publications, participate in grant proposal preparation, supervise graduate and undergraduate students, and seasonal workers in laboratory, greenhouse, and field setup.
  • Undertake assigned tasks in other related vegetable breeding projects.
Required Qualifications
  • PhD in Plant Breeding or an equivalent field.
  • Prior experience in onion breeding, disease resistance screening, genomic selection, and wet‑lab research.
  • Proficiency in scripting using Python or R.
  • Experience setting up cages for onion breeding crosses and analyzing breeding data.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret metabolomics and transcriptomics data.
  • Ability to utilize genomic selection to identify novel QTLs from biparental mapping populations.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • High dedication required for a start‑up breeding program; ability to work weekends and long hours during peak seasons.
  • Operation of motor vehicles as needed.
