Position Summary
This is a Research Professional position working on soybean breeding and genetics. The role is funded by grants from the United Soybean Board, University of Georgia Research Foundation, and other agencies to support field and lab research activities as well as graduate student education. The incumbent will collaborate with the research coordinator and team members to conduct soybean breeding field experiments and develop soybean varieties.
Responsibilities- Work closely with the research coordinator and team members in all field research activities: seed cleaning, treatment, packaging, planting, managing and maintaining field plots, taking field notes, harvesting plots and plant rows, pod picking, prop‑harvest phenotyping, seed composition analysis, and field chemical spray as needed.
- Set up, determine layout, manage, and harvest summer and winter crossing blocks and greenhouse increases; spray chemicals for weed, pest, and pathogen control; participate in soybean pollination in both field and greenhouse.
- Operate GPS‑equipped tractor for planting and end‑trimming, plot combine for harvesting, and maintain field plot equipment.
- Provide support to graduate students and postdoctoral researchers on their projects; perform additional duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in agricultural production systems and plant breeding; proficiency in field research activities.
- Ability to learn new technologies and work effectively in both field and lab environments.
- Excellent teamwork skills.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Ability to operate farm equipment with a basic understanding of maintenance and to prioritize work to meet deadlines.
- Attention to detail, initiative, and adherence to experimental protocols.
- Effective written and oral communication and the ability to work well in a team.
- Experience in field research and a willingness to learn new technologies.
- Withstand sustained periods of physical activity such as standing, bending, reaching above shoulder level, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Operate farm equipment and work extended hours during peak seasons such as planting and harvest.
- Driving as needed to perform job duties.
