Position SummarySelected applicant will provide assistance in greenhouse research activities including potting, planting, fertilizing, watering, weeding, pollinating, data collection, disease screening, and harvesting plants belonging to different breeding populations. Applicant will assist in maintaining greenhouse and laboratory spaces, perform basic field and laboratory research such as tissue sample collection, pollinations, disease screening, and setting up field studies. Basic lab protocols, including molecular biology techniques, will also be performed.
The applicant will be responsible for lab maintenance chores such as washing glassware, preparing simple solutions and media, autoclaving supplies, and waste disposal to keep laboratory space neat and orderly.
- 30% of time:
Tend to plants in greenhouse—plant, weed, fertilize, water, pollinate, harvest, disease screening, and data collection. - 30% of time:
Collect plant samples, label, flag, stake, perform data collection, execute pollinations, make breeding crosses, and conduct disease screening. - 20% of time:
Perform lab protocols such as nucleic acid extraction and other vegetable breeding related research. - 20% of time:
Conduct lab maintenance and chores—wash glassware, autoclave supplies, prepare basic solutions and media, take away trash, etc.
Undergraduate students majoring in plant biology, agriculture, crop and soil science. Prior lab experience is preferred but not mandatory.
Knowledge, Skills, AbilitiesBasic knowledge about molecular biology and plant breeding is desirable.
Physical DemandsLift up to 50 lbs. and withstand outdoor elements for extended periods of time. Driving is required.
