Position SummaryThe individual at this position will function as an integral member of a team to conduct soybean breeding and genetics field experiments and to develop soybean varieties.
Responsibilities- Lead setting up, laying out, and managing both summer and winter crossing blocks and lead the team for soybean pollination in both field and greenhouse and managing the greenhouse materials.
- Manage the soybean breeding database and conduct the experimental design, harvest plans, data quality control, data analysis, interpretation, and result summarization. Responsible for maintaining seed purity and seed inventories and increasing them as needed.
- Closely work with program research coordinator and other team members in all aspects of field research activities, including seed cleaning, treatment and packaging, planting, managing and maintaining field plots, taking field notes, harvesting plots and plant rows, pod picking, post-harvest phenotyping, seed composition analyses.
- Assist in PI and research coordinator to coordinate the breeding projects for regional trials, cooperative tests and serve a liaison between Seed Lab and Molecular Lab for marker-assisted selection and other projects; maintain an inventory of supplies used in our research and order supplies on a needed basis.
- Provide support to the graduate student training and their projects, be responsible for recruiting and managing undergraduate students for the daily tasks and responsible for maintaining and utilizing the NIR machines for soybean seed composition analysis.
- Purchase when necessary urgent research field supplies to prevent the delay or loss of research. Complete reconciliation of P-Card receipts and Statements monthly.
- Ability to work in the field, define work priorities and meet the timeline.
- Demonstrated ability to pay attention to details, take initiatives, follow experimental protocols.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and oral and to work effectively in a team setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the agricultural production systems and plant breeding; experience in field research activities; ability to learn new technology.
- Demonstrated teamwork skills, and ability to work in both field and lab environment.
- Withstand sustained periods of physical activity such as standing, bending, reaching above shoulder level and lift 50 pounds.
- Operate farm equipment and work extended hours during peak seasons, such as planting and harvest seasons.
