Research Professional

Position Summary:

Duties include designing, developing, organizing, and supervising a major recombinant protein expression project utilizing bacterial or mammalian cell culture systems. The role focuses on large‑scale protein production for enzyme structural and functional studies, coordinating with senior faculty, postdoctoral researchers, technicians, and undergraduate researchers to achieve project objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Design new recombinant DNA constructs within the Moremen lab, coordinating with senior faculty and collaborators at remote sites. (35%)
  • Generate recombinant constructs and verify by DNA sequencing. (15%)
  • Isolate large‑scale recombinant DNAs for mammalian cell transfection. (25%)
  • Identify optimal protocols for large‑scale plasmid DNA preparations. (5%)
  • Establish and optimize strategies and protocols for purification of expressed proteins. (5%)
  • Train and supervise research technicians and undergraduate researchers in plasmid preparation, protein purification, and characterization. (10%)
  • Collaborate with structural biology groups for sample preparation for enzymatic glycan synthesis, NMR analysis, and crystallization. (5%)
  • Supervise day‑to‑day laboratory activity, ensuring project goals are met and safety protocols followed.
Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree in a relevant field; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • Strong laboratory skills in molecular biology, protein expression, purification, and general laboratory techniques.
  • Experience with bacterial propagation, mammalian cell culture, and enzymology.
  • Ability to design recombinant constructs, perform DNA sequencing verification, and scale protein production.
  • Excellent organizational skills to prioritize multiple parallel projects.
  • Effective communication and training skills for supervising junior staff and students.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Detailed knowledge of molecular biology and biochemistry protocols.
  • Proficiency in working with expression platforms and coordinating concurrent projects.
  • Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills.
