Exempt. General Function: A Bakery Department Manager is responsible for setting the department standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, professional appearance, and overall profitability. The Manager coordinates the delivery of the freshest and best quality products at competitive retail prices and ensures a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient service to customers and team members.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Set department standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, professional appearance, and profitability.
- Maintain a friendly atmosphere by encouraging employees to greet and speak to customers and providing prompt, courteous, and efficient service.
- Assist customers with locating products, securing items, loading or unloading heavy items, and addressing suggestions or requests.
- Answer telephone calls promptly and take product orders.
- Recruit, hire, train, supervise, discipline, and evaluate all department employees.
- Determine department goals with the store director and develop weekly schedules and daily work plans.
- Inspect signage and displays for quality and quantity, and order product for replenishment.
- Communicate sales and promotional ideas to employees.
- Handle and resolve customer issues.
- Calculate retail pricing and ensure correct pricing is applied.
- Extend invoices, post invoices, and oversee department bookkeeping procedures.
- Analyze weekly and monthly sales and trends, prepare projections, and write advertisements.
- Conduct inventory of the department, plan displays and promotions, and determine pre‑orders.
- Ensure proper temperatures and storage procedures are maintained to guarantee freshness and control shrinkage.
- Understand and troubleshoot equipment, ensuring maintenance is performed.
- Adhere to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene, dress, and other policies.
- Report to work on schedule and meet expected hours of service.
- Ensure pricing is competitive in the local market.
- Attend meetings, seminars, and continuing education sessions.
- Fill displays and work in the sales area.
- Unload trucks, check in delivered merchandise, and place products in appropriate storage.
- Perform other departmental duties as needed.
- Assist in other store areas or projects as required.
- Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions.
- Proficiency in arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
- Strong written communication skills, including composition of correspondence.
- Interviewing and applicant assessment capability.
- Ability to follow technical manuals and maintain contact with customers and employees.
High school diploma or equivalent, with on‑the‑job training and sanitation courses, and over one year of related work experience.
Supervisory Responsibilities (Direct Reports)Instructs, assigns, reviews, and plans the work of others; maintains standards; coordinates activities; allocates personnel; addresses employee problems; selects new employees; approves employee discipline; recommends employee transfer, discharge, and salary increases.
Physical Requirements- Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally for team lifting; up to 50 pounds frequently; up to 10 pounds constantly.
- Requires visual acuity from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet, with or without correction, color vision, and field of vision.
- Climb, balance, stoop, kneel, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions.
- Frequent exposure to temperature extremes and dampness.
- Potential hazards from pallet jack use, electrical shock, and cleaning chemicals.
- Fast‑paced environment.
- Telephone, fax, copier, intercom system, calculator, cash register.
- Mixers, ovens, sheeter, rounder, pan washer, fryer, label machine, shrink‑wrap machine, Telexon ordering unit, C.A.R.S. system, computer, and cake‑making machines.
Responsible for company assets including equipment and merchandise.
Contacts- Daily contact with customers, employees, suppliers/vendors, and the general public.
- Occasional contact with local, federal or state regulatory agencies regarding inspections.
Access to confidential information such as employee compensation, monthly results, quarterly inventory reports, sales and profit sheets, and warehouse pricing.
