Position SummaryThe Museum Shop Associate supports the daily operations of the museum retail shop while delivering exceptional customer service to museum visitors. This position serves as a welcoming point of contact for guests, assists with retail transactions, and supports merchandising, inventory, and general shop operations. The Museum Shop Associate contributes to a positive visitor experience while helping advance the museum’s mission through retail engagement.
Responsibilities- Greet and welcome visitors in a professional, friendly, and engaging manner.
- Provide exceptional customer service by assisting guests with merchandise selection, product questions, and purchases.
- Operate the point‑of‑sale system and accurately process purchases, returns, exchanges, and payment transactions.
- Maintain knowledge of museum exhibitions, programs, and merchandise to answer visitor questions and provide recommendations.
- Promote museum memberships, exhibitions, programs, and special events when appropriate.
- Resolve visitor concerns professionally and, when necessary, escalated issues to management.
- Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for visitors, staff, and volunteers.
- Answer the phone in a courteous and professional manner, transferring to the appropriate department when needed.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and visually appealing shop environment.
- Restock merchandise, organize displays, and assist with merchandising efforts, including exhibit‑related and seasonal product placement.
- Monitor inventory levels and notify supervisors of low‑stock items.
- Assist with receiving, unpacking, pricing, and organizing merchandise shipments.
- Participate in inventory counts, stock reconciliation, and retail reporting processes as assigned.
- Follow established loss prevention and security procedures.
- Ensure shop materials, supplies, and displays are properly maintained and organized.
- Work collaboratively with museum staff to support shop operations and overall visitor experience goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Customer service knowledge and strong interpersonal skills to effectively greet, assist, and engage diverse museum visitors.
- Skill in operating point‑of‑sale systems and accurately processing cash and retail transactions.
- Ability to maintain organized, visually appealing merchandise displays and support inventory processes, including stocking and tracking items.
- Knowledge of museum exhibits, programs, and retail offerings, with the ability to communicate information and promote memberships and events.
- Ability to multitask, resolve customer concerns professionally, and collaborate with staff to support smooth daily shop operations.
High school diploma or equivalent.
