Position: Correctional Officer / Corporal

Hiring Incentive

One‑time $3,000 hiring incentive paid in $1,000 increments over the first year of employment. Incentive is paid upon successful completion of 3 months (Payment #1), 6 months (Payment #2), and 12 months (Payment #3). Program availability is subject to funding and manager approval.

Reporting Line

Reports to:

Correctional Sergeant, Food Services Sergeant, Correctional Lieutenant (Diversion Center), or Superintendent.

Purpose of the Job

The primary purpose is to maintain order and supervise inmates in the Athens‑Clarke County Correctional Institution, Food Service Center, or Diversion Center. Duties include securing inmate count, supervising visitation, ensuring facility security, coordinating inmate placement for outside work, inspecting facility, maintaining cleanliness, controlling tools and chemicals, providing leadership, reacting to emergencies, and performing additional duties as assigned.

Work Schedule

Twelve‑hour rotating shifts, 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m. All Correctional Officers work weekends and may be required to work on religious holidays. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Officers must work cooperatively with others and, when applicable, operate vehicles safely and in accordance with ACC’s safe‑driving policy.

Emergency Position

Position requires attendance under all types of emergency conditions, such as inclement weather, utility failure, fire, or other forced evacuations as determined by management.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Current Georgia Basic Correctional Officer Training program certification and BCOT certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • One year of correctional officer experience preferred.
Additional Requirements for Correctional Corporal
  • Two years as a BCOT certified Correctional Officer.
  • Certificate of Appointment of Notary Public (if required).
  • P.O.S.T. Certification in Corrections in good standing.
  • Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field of study preferred.
Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure inmate security by observing behavior, conducting head counts, and securing gates, doors, and rooms.
  • Inspect facilities, maintain cleanliness and sanitary conditions, and control tools and chemicals.
  • Supervise inmate visitation and monitor communications (telephone, radio, intercom).
  • Transport inmates within and outside the facility, including to outside work details.
  • Respond to emergencies, including isolating and managing inmates in segregation or sick room.
  • Serve on disciplinary committee, process new and outgoing inmates, and perform other related duties.
  • When assigned to Food Service Division, oversee food unloading, inventory, contract work, and safety inspections.
  • When assigned to Diversion Center, manage inmate activities, oversee transportation and head counts, handle daily financial transactions, and facilitate clerical duties such as data entry and audit assistance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Corrections Department policies, procedures, laws, and defensive tactics.
  • Skills in interpersonal communication, observation, crisis response, record keeping, and independent judgment.
  • Ability to respond quickly and logically in emergency or stressful situations.
  • Ability to handle mathematical calculations and schedule planning.
  • Ability to operate equipment such as two‑way radios, firearms, and vehicles safely.
  • Strong teamwork and conflict resolution abilities.
Physical Requirements

Must be physically able to operate machinery, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, carry out defensive actions, and perform frequent repetitive motions. Physical demands include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and use of body members for tasks.
