This position offers a one-time $3,000 hiring incentive paid in $1,000 increments upon satisfactory performance at 3, 6, and 12 months.
Reports ToCorrectional Sergeant / Food Services Sergeant / Correctional Lieutenant (Diversion Center) / Superintendent.
Employment Details- FLSA Status: Non‑exempt
- Classification: Personnel System – requires satisfactory completion of a twelve‑month probationary period
- Pay Grade: CR01; placement on the step plan depends on qualifications
- Safety Sensitive: Yes – subject to random drug testing per the Athens‑Clarke County Drug and Alcohol Ordinance
Twelve‑hour shifts, rotating days off. Shifts are 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. All Correctional Officers are required to work weekends and may be required to work on religious holidays. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Must work cooperatively with others.
Emergency PositionThis position requires attendance at work under all types of emergency conditions, such as inclement weather, utility failure, fire, forced evacuations, or as determined by the Manager.
Minimum Training & Experience- High School Diploma or equivalent, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Must meet current certification requirements set forth in the Georgia Basic Correctional Officer Training program.
- Must obtain BCOT Certification in Corrections within twelve months of hire date.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- One year of Correctional Officer experience preferred.
- For Corporal candidates: two years as a BCOT certified Correctional Officer, P.O.S.T. Certification in Corrections and be in good standing, ability to obtain a Notary Public appointment (if applicable), Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred.
The primary purpose of this job is to maintain order and supervise inmates in the Athens‑Clarke County Correctional Institution, Food Service Center, or Diversion Center. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Ensure inmate count and maintain security of the facility.
- Supervise inmate visitation and maintain order.
- Coordinate placement of inmates on outside work details.
- Perform regular inspections of the facility; maintain cleanliness and sanitation.
- Control tools and chemicals; ensure proper use.
- Provide leadership and supervision over inmates.
- React quickly and effectively to situations jeopardizing health and safety.
- Transport inmates within and outside the institution as needed.
- Assist in shakedown and head‑count processes.
- Monitor telephone, radio, and intercom systems.
- Monitor inmates in isolation segregation and sick rooms.
- Fill in for other employees in their absence, including assuming shift‑supervisor duties when necessary.
- Serve on the disciplinary committee.
- Provide processing of new inmates and outbound processing.
- Direct unloading of, and inspect, food and supplies delivered to the facility.
- Ensure correct inventory.
- Prevent contraband entry.
- Assist in organizing inmate work in the Food Service operational areas.
- Fill in for other employees in their absence or when needed, including duties of Assistant Food Service Coordinator or Security Operations.
- Monitor and assist with inmate activities and control inmate traffic between activities.
- Process new inmates and those being processed out.
- Transport inmates within and outside the Diversion Center as needed.
- Assist in shakedown and head‑count processes.
- Ensure all gates, doors, rooms, etc., are locked and secure as scheduled.
- Monitor telephone, radio, and intercom.
- Fill in for other employees in their absence, including shift‑supervisor duties.
- Serve on the disciplinary committee (if assigned).
- Handle receipts and code daily monies; balance deposits with receipts.
- Provide ordinance and guideline information to the general public.
- Enter data and edit and balance daily, monthly, and year‑end reports.
