Position Summary
The security guard assists in the proper protection of persons and property in and around all residential communities housing more than 9,000 residents. The role addresses policy violations, monitors for building security issues, conducts patrols, interacts professionally with students and staff, maintains accurate paperwork, and provides coverage during holidays, breaks, and special events as needed. The successful candidate will have an eye for detail and be committed to high‑quality work.
Minimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities- Write clear and accurate shift and incident reports.
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Work effectively with all levels of staff from a variety of campus departments.
- Learn security systems and operate body camera.
- Learn about each residential building and surrounding grounds.
- Commit to a University Housing‑first philosophy by promoting student success and supporting University Housing, Division of Student Affairs, and UGA missions and goals.
- Safeguard physical security of facilities and protect sensitive information through adherence to cybersecurity policies and best practices.
- Act promptly to report any security concerns or incidents and promote a culture of security awareness.
- Embrace an entrepreneurial spirit by identifying protection opportunities and cost savings.
- Be present and on time for all scheduled work; communicate proactively for unavoidable absences and follow leave and policy procedures.
- Provide a positive student experience by being courteous, caring, patient, flexible, and working to resolve issues or problems promptly.
- Maintain a positive and productive environment by adhering to departmental, campus, and UGS policies and procedures.
- Designated as Essential Personnel Pool; may be required to report to work during closed or modified conditions; communication will occur via phone, email, or other agreed‑upon method.
- Participate in departmental "all hands‑on‑deck" events such as move‑in, move‑out, and residence hall emergencies.
- Walk 5 miles or more during a shift.
- Exercise alertness and judgment to detect and report probable danger.
- Verbal communication and hearing to detect distress.
- Safely operate a UGA state vehicle as necessary.
- Perform work outdoors in hot or cold weather conditions.
- Conduct foot patrols around assigned residential community, checking buildings and grounds.
- Watch for and report all life safety issues such as suspicious persons, fire hazards, leaking water pipes, and unlocked security doors.
- Examine doors, windows, and gates to ensure they are secure.
- Provide walking escorts for students and vehicle transport for housing staff upon request.
- Provide coverage during all University holidays, breaks, and special events such as football games and residence hall move‑in days.
- Interact with students, Housing staff, and campus partners respectfully and professionally.
- Wear and activate body‑worn camera when responding to incidents and providing escorts or transport.
- Address, report, and document any policy violations or violations of the law.
- Work with and support UGA Police Officers as directed when they enter the residence halls.
- Complete required training sessions, some of which may occur during off‑shift hours.
- Maintain and submit accurate, detailed, and professional paperwork and reports.
- Complete monthly inspections of lifesaving equipment in all traditional residence halls.
- Perform other duties consistent with the purpose of this position as assigned.
Yes; driving is a responsibility of this position.
