Hiring Incentive
$3,000 one‑time hiring incentive paid in $1,000 installments: $1,000 after 3 months, $1,000 after 6 months, $1,000 after 12 months = $3,000. Detention Officers who complete POST Certification and are promoted to Deputy Sheriff within 18 months receive an additional $3,000 paid in $1,000 installments over the year after promotion, for a total of $6,000. Incentives are subject to funding and approval.

The purpose of this position is to ensure the security and protection of the jail facility and its property, manage the admission process of inmates, prevent escapes, control inmate behavior, protect inmates from each other, and provide for their wellbeing. The incumbent must maintain inmate counts, oversee medication dispensing, and handle inmates' personal property. The incumbent must also adhere to standard operating procedures that respect inmates' constitutional rights.
This demanding position requires heightened state of readiness at all times.
Work schedule:
Twelve (12) hour shifts from 7:45 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. will be assigned permanently to days or nights. Availability is required for any shift. Weekends, holidays, and overtime may be required. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Must work cooperatively with others. If vehicle operation is required, the incumbent is responsible for vehicle safety and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy.
This position is designated as an emergency position that requires attendance at work under all types of emergency conditions, including inclement weather, utility failure, fire or forced evacuations, or any circumstances determined by the Manager.
Responsibilities- Admission:
- Completes admission forms of inmates booked into Athens‑Clarke County Jail.
- Searches incoming inmates to detect concealed weapons and contraband and records personal property taken from the inmate.
- Fingerprints and photographs the inmates to establish identification.
- Determines if medical care of the inmate is necessary.
- Explains to inmates the rules, regulations, and prepares inmates for population.
- Personal Care:
- Works with jail medical staff for dispensing medications prescribed for inmates at the proper time.
- Distributes meals to inmates at mealtime.
- Takes actions to calm emotionally upset persons.
- Permits and monitors inmate showers.
- Observes inmate behavior to ensure orderly and safe environment.
- Administers First Aid and CPR to inmates or staff when necessary and when security not jeopardized.
- Maintains fair and professional attitude with inmates and staff from various social backgrounds.
- Security:
- Maintains order over inmates.
- Takes appropriate action to ensure safety and security of inmates, public, law enforcement, and personnel.
- Responds to emergency situations, evacuating inmates, mediating conflicts.
- Checks cell doors and internal conditions regularly and irregularly to assure security, cleanliness, and safety.
- Conducts random searches of inmates and assigned secure areas.
- Counts inmates regularly and irregularly to assure all are accounted for.
- Views security monitors continuously to assure security and order in cells.
- Operates security electronic systems, intercom, restraining devices, chemical agents, radios, and locking devices.
- Operates safety equipment such as fire extinguishers and self‑contained breathing apparatus.
